The typical sump pump uses a 1/3 hp electrical motor, although 1/2 hp units are available. In terms of pumping capacity, the requirements depend on how much water your basement collects, how many feet the pump has to raise the water in order to reach ground level, and how far the water has to be pumped out to the discharge point. Take note of those circumstances before you head out for the store. A larger size is usually overkill, and often technical information on the pump package will help you select a model that is hefty enough for your needs. A safe bet is to match the rating of the old pump, but if you are tempted to go with overkill, remember to confirm that the electrical circuit that connects the sump pump has enough amperage to handle whatever larger model you choose.
