Overview |
Coleus are a large group of foliage plants
that come in a wide variety of
intriguing
color combinations and leaf forms.
They are
usually grown as annuals, since
they will
not survive a frost. The can
be grown as
house plants if given enough
bright light.
Older varieties are grown in
the shade outdoors,
but newer types will thrive in
the sun as
long as they are not allowed
to dry out.
Coleus make wonderful plants
in flower borders
where they can be planted in
mass quantities
for a spectacular effect. They
also make
beautiful container plants. The
following
should be considered when buying
coleus:
- Select the color, height and spread appropriate
for the site.
- The plants should have healthy looking leaves
and vigorous root systems.
Many gardeners pinch back the
spiky flowers
that grow from the tips of coleus.
This keeps
the plants very full and lush
looking. |
