Trash Compactors
Installing a trash compactor in your kitchen
can help eliminate the hassle of dealing
with the trash. Compactors can reduce the
volume of your trash by 75%, so that trips
to the outside garbage can are significantly
reduced. Compactors are small enough for
even kitchens with limited space. They range
in height from 34 1/8 to 35 inches, in width
from 12 to 15 inches, and in depth from 24
to 24 1/4 inches. They can be purchased as
freestanding, under the counter, or convertible
models. Trash are available in finishes such
as white, black, almond and stainless steel.
If you are thinking about buying a trash
compactor, consider the following:
- Most compactor models come with a 1/3 horsepower
motor and have 1.4 cubic feet of capacity.
They can have 2000, 2300 or 5000 pounds of
compacting ram force. A higher force means
that you can put more trash into the compactor.
- Convenient features include toe bar draw
openers, rear rollers for easy installation,
built in air fresheners or charcoal filters,
on/off control buttons, and caddies that
store paper or plastic bags.
- Look for models that have safety features
such as ant-jamming systems, tilt sensors
that prevent the compactor from operating
if it is not level, and removable key knob
controls that prevent the compactor from
accidentally starting.
- Trash compactors are easy to maintain. They
only need an occasional interior vacuuming
and an exterior mopping with hot, soapy water.
Air fresheners or charcoal filters must be
periodically replaced.
Full compactor bags can weigh as much as
50 pounds. Do not completely fill the bag
if you cannot carry that much weight. |
